Siemens designs sinter plant for Ukrainian steel producer EMZ

• Annual production capacity: 4.3 million metric tons of sinter
• Selective waste gas recirculation cuts quantity of sinter offgas in half and reduces coke requirements by up to ten percent
• Meros offgas cleaning will reduce emissions by up to 99 percent

Siemens Metals Technologies has received an order from the Metinvest Group to carry out detailed engineering work on a new sinter plant for PJSC "Yenakiieve Iron and Steel Works" (EMZ), a Ukrainian steel producer. The sinter plant will be built at the Yenakiieve Plant in the Donbass Region and is designed to produce 4.3 million metric tons of sinter a year. Selective waste gas recirculation will not only cut the quantity of sinter offgas in half, but also reduce coke consumption. The remaining offgas will be cleaned by a Meros plant (Maximized Emission Reduction Of Sintering), which will reduce emissions by up to 99 percent. The mixing and granulating system from Siemens allows EMZ to use the locally available, ultra-fine iron ore concentrates at high productivity levels. Construction is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2014 and commissioning is planned for 2016.
 
The new plant will almost double EMZ's sint er production capacity. The plant design targets at substantial reduction of plant emissions and the use of energy. The sinter plant from Siemens will feature a specially developed offgas recirculation system which will feed about half of the hot offgas back into the sinter process. This will cut both coke consumption and CO2 emissions by up to ten percent. The other half of the offgas will be cleaned in a Meros plant which will lower dust and pollutant emissions by between 92 and 99 percent. The implementation of a covered stockyard and an aspiration system for the complete raw material and sinter handling will eliminate other sources of dus t emissions. Starting up, the EMZ sinter plant will be one of the cleanest of its type in the world, improving the air quality both in the plant and in the town of Yenakiieve. Overall emissions from the EMZ steelworks are likely to be reduced to one seventh of their former level.
 
Another special feature of the sinter plant will be the intensive mixing and granulation system designed by Siemens. This will allow EMZ to use a wider range of raw materials, in particular, the locally available iron ore concentrates. Incombination with the high energy efficiency of the plant, EMZ will in future be able to produce sinter at a lower cost than steel producers in Western Europe. The automation system specially developed by Siemens for sinter plants is an integral part of the plant design and will ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation. EMZ operates plants in the Ukraine in Yenakiieve and Makiivka. The company is a leading manufacturer of commercial billets.
