In present paper the extraction ability of a number of acetylcontaining phosphine oxides R2P(O)CMe2CH2C(O) Me relative to lanthanum (III), neodymium (III), holmium (III) and ytterbium (III) in nitric acid was studied. Comparison of extraction properties of acetylcontaining phosphine oxides and carbamoylphosphine oxides — Ph2P(O)CH2C(O)NBu2 shows that acetylcontaining phosphineoxides extract trivalent lanthanides from 2 mole/l nitric acid much more efficiently than reference ligand — diphenyldibutylmethylcarbamoylphosphine oxide. The highest selectivity for separation of pairs heavy-light lanthanide exhibit acetylcontaining phosphine oxides with longest carbon radicals at phosphorus atom. Replacement of alkyl substituents at phosphorus atom on phenyl one virtually does not change the efficiency and selectivity of the extraction, in contrast to the sharp increase in the efficiency at such a replacement in the case of reagents forming chelate complexes with extracted metals. As a consequence it can be assumed that the investigated acetylcontaining phosphine oxides at extraction of lanthanides from 2 mole/l nitric acid act as monodenthate extractants. However, unlike the well known monodenthate phosphoryl containing substances that successfully extract trivalent lanthanides only at high concentrations of nitric acid — 5 mole/l and above, the acetylcontaining phosphine oxides effectively extract lanthanides already from 2 mole/l nitric acid. Increasing the length of the alkyl radical at phosphorus atom (increase of the ligand lipophilicity) increases the selectivity of the extractant for pairs heavy-light lanthanides.
