Abstract

Among the problems, connected with handling spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from naval nuclear power systems (NPS) in North-European region of Russia (Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions), the problem of long-term storage of SNF is gaining greater importance. At present, this kind of SNF is not reprocessed due to lack of technical means for its transportation and disposal. In this case, there is a need in organization of long-term storage of this type of SNF directly in the region of its formation. But to provide that, on the one hand, safety of long-term storage of radioactive materials should be increased, and, on the other hand, necessary conditions should be created to continue unloading SNF from reactors of recycled nuclear submarines.
