Abstract

The article puts up to the history of the Mining Journal, one of the oldest technical publications in Russia. The Mining Journal was established in 1825. One of the first technical magazines, the Mining Journal was at bottom an encyclopedia, and that was one of its distinctive features. The scope of the Journal covered physics and chemistry (in special sections), crystallography and mineralogy, paleontology and geology, hydrogeology, mineral and salt mining, mining economy and statistics, ore concentration and processing, coinage and metallurgy. From the very first years, the Mining Journal became widely popular both in Russia and abroad. In a span of 190 years, the Journal has published enormous number of papers, reviews and articles highlighting various aspects of mining and metallurgy, mining machinery, economy, inventions and discoveries, as well as education and personnel training in mining. The Mining Journal is a vivid chronicle of research performed by Russian engineers and scientists making a huge contribution to the domestic and worldwide science and technology. Published at different times, Journal’s articles give a clear evidence of incontestable primacy of the Russian science. The Mining Journal is to the present day one of the principal aids for students of special and higher education in mining. The Journal offers its pages for popularization of knowledge of science and technology to foster domestic mining industry.
