Abstract

The paper discusses stages of digital geological surveying documentation (GSD) generation. The related development trends are specified and IT technologies of generation, use, archiving and long-term storage using advanced computer programs are presented. The authors show the risk of total or partial loss of working and archive GSD, the basic methods and technology of the loss prevention, including archiving of report GSD in electronic and hard-copy form. The most sapid section of the paper seems to be the description and comparison of the two archive and use methods for GSD: conventional, with removable media, and the innovative cloud technologies. Each method is supported with the information on hardware/software tools, method and means of improvement and upgrading, safety, storage and long-term preservation of digital information. For the cloud (dissipative) technology, the paper describes in detail the interaction between a user and “cloud” provider of information. The problem of archive information authenticity to be preserved is also considered. The authors emphasize that the major advantages of the cloud technologies are the reduction in the capital and operating expenditures of data user for purchase and upgrading of program products, and the availability of the up-to-the-minute program releases as soon as they appear on the services market.
