Abstract

The paper presents two patented combinations of no-blast selective mining machinery proposed for open pit extraction of soft and medium-hard minerals and overburden from complex structure deposits and ore bodies (coal, phosphates, fluxing stone, peat, etc.). The authors describe flow charts of selective slice-and-stripe cutting of minerals and barren (enclosing) rocks by cutter-loaders combined with self-propelled scrapers and dump trucks (the first combination) or with self-propelled two-compartment hopper and dump trucks (the second combination). For the decision-making on continuing design and industrial trail of the equipment and technologies, the first combination was tested in Urgalsky open pit coal mine, and pre-feasibility study of the machine group efficiency was carried out based on the standard procedures for estimation of net present value (NPV), profitability index (PI) and payback period (PP). From the comparison of the conventional mining with blasting, cutter-loaders and dump trucks and the offered combinations for no-blast selective mining with cutter-loaders (in terms of Urgalsky open pit mine), the latter have shown higher efficiency, which allows continuous flow process of open pit mining, minimization of loss and dilution and elimination of dangerous and environmentally unsound blasting operations.
