Abstract

Russia is among a few countries that posses well-developed iron industry capable of covering in full the iron ore material requirements by own resources. This is possible owing to substantial iron ore reserves by amount of which Russia ranks among the top countries of the world. Availability of the mature iron ore material base, major portion of assets of which belongs to national vertically integrated metallurgical holdings, is the key competitive advantage of the Russian ferrous metallurgy commodities on the world market. The article analyzes state-of-the-art of iron ore materials in Russia. The distribution of in-place reserves of high-, mid- and low-grade iron ore in the federal districts of Russia is discussed. The authors introduce the captains of the iron ore metallurgy industry and represent their technical-andeconomic performance in terms of extraction of crude iron ore and production of iron ore concentrates, pellets and agglomerated cake. The discussion involves challenges concerned with further development of metallurgical industry in Russia, export and import of iron ore materials, implementation of new mine projects, as well as increase in capacity and exploitation of the available iron ore deposits in Russia. The forecast of iron ore material supplies base development in Russia is made.

The work is supported by the RF Ministry of Science and Education, in the framework of the Federal Target Program “Research and Development in the Lines of Priority Advancement of Science and Technology in Russia in 2014–2020” (Grant Agreement No. 14.578.21.0049).
