Abstract

The authors discuss provisions for enhancing efficiency of different quality coal mining in South Yakutia based on the improved knowledge on geological reserves. It is shown that there is a contradiction between the estimated variability of basic useful qualities of underground coal and the demand for high-grade and stable-quality coal to be supplied on competitive markets. The variation in the plastic layer thickness, which serves as the estimation criterion for coking coal in the CIS countries, can reach, for instance, in the Elginsk coal deposit, in the near zone of a drill hole and between neighbor drill holes, even in the unoxidized area, 15–25 mm at the mean square deviation of 5.8–9.7 mm. This variability is added with nonadditivity of coking characteristics of coal and spatially irregular boundaries of oxidation areas. Ash content varies in wide ranges too. For low dressable Elginsk coal, the ash content variation from bed to bed can reach 20–37%. Aimed at the production quality control, based on the processing of geological data on different deposits within the specified coalfield, it is proposed to use the coefficient of geological–economic impoverishment of measured coal reserves and differentiate ash content in coal planned for extraction by a number of components the shares of which vary in beds and in face areas. Using the components directly connected with coal mining and dressing, the authors have assessed the potential decrease in the ash content of coal reserves. The article emphasizes the requirement for operating mines to account for coal quality indexes used in coal rating in foreign countries.
