Abstract

The peat has been actively used by Russian power engineering for 100 years. Peat is a widely spread and the most available energy carrier of raw materials, which played an important stabilizing part in Russian economics in the first part of the XX century, especially in the war years. However, in the following years, in connection with the commercializing of the country, the usage of peat became more rare, giving the way to the usage of cheaper and universal energy carriers – oil and natural gas. To 2011, the extraction capacity of peat in Russia had decreased to 2 mln. t per year (in comparison with 200 mln. t in 1980-s). According to this, many peat fields became neglected. As a result, there have arisen the fire risk problems of drain and neglected peat deposits. These problems became especially sharp in the anomaly hot summer 2010.
This article considers the question of necessity of reanimation of Russian peat industry on the basis of complex usage of peat in Russian power engineering, agriculture and chemical industry.
