Abstract

Operation of remote production facilities, especially in the sector of exploration drilling and mineral mining, involves generation of much hazardous waste, first of all, drilling waste and waste water. Drilling waste is a multi-component and polydisperse mix of crushed rocks, drilling mud remnants, petroleum derivatives and reagents. The hazard of drilling waste is conditioned by the toxicity and ability to contaminate soil and water for a long time. The existing environmental protection legislation in the Russian Federation imposes stringent regulations on treatment of such waste. However, actual implementation of such regulations is equivocal for fixed-area and mobile production facilities. It is substantiated to be necessary for production units running short-time work at remote and frequentmovable facilities to observe standards of environmental management. A concept of a treatment plant on the basis of a 20ft container is developed, integrating intake, reagent treatment and dewatering of sludge using a drum filter. The process flow diagram includes such core modules as: receiver–accumulator to intake sludge directly from a drilling plant; reagent module—dosing and mixing of flocculants and coagulants for the sludge preparation for dewatering; dewatering module—a continuous-action drum vacuum filter to separate solid phase (cake) and filtrate; filtrate post-treatment module—a system of filters and sorbents for clarification of water to a level of its possible recycling in the work cycle (for instance, drilling mud preparation); control system—the automated control of the key process parameters. The use of the treatment unit suggests a positive effect in terms of reduction of environmental risks and economic losses, ensuring observance of ecological standards by a mobile production facility.
