The plugging process in screw rolling mills is one of the effective ones in the production of hot-rolled pipes, as it ensures high accuracy of the wall thickness of finished pipes. The main factor determining the quality of hot-rolled pipes is the wear resistance of the rolling mandrels. Particular attention is paid to the rolling mandrels due to the fact that it is the condition of their working surface that affects the quality of the inner surface of the pipes and the accuracy of geometric dimensions. Increased wear of the mandrel is a consequence of large axial and radial forces of the metal on the tool and its sliding relative to the working surface during the plugging process. In this paper, the dependence of the axial force of the metal on the tool in the process of plugging pipes made of 40Kh steel on the pilot industrial two-high screw rolling mill “MISIS-130D” is investigated. During the research, the following factors were varied: the feed angle of the rolls during plugging on a movable and stationary mandrel, the presence of process lubrication, and the reduction in wall thickness. During the plugging process, a technological lubricant in the form of sodium tripolyphosphate was used. Key words: screw rolling, rolling, axial force, rolling mandrel, production of seamless pipes.

This work was completed as part of the integrated project “Development and implementation of integrated technologies for the production of seamless pipes made of new-generation steels with controlled corrosion resistance under severe operating conditions for the fuel and energy sector of the Russian Federation” under Agreement No. 075-11-2025-017 dated February 27, 2025, in accordance with Russian Government Resolution No. 218 dated April 9, 2010.
