The article points at priorities of coal production in the subjects of the Far East Federal District (FEFD) up to 2035. It is found that the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Chukotka Autonomous District, as well as the Sakhalin, Amur, Kamchatka Regions and the Khabarovsk Territory have great potential of increasing coal production. On the other hand, development in the coal mining industry in these subjects will in a greater or lesser degree depend on gasifi cation of the Russian Far East and on the business trends in the international and national markets of energy resources. In case of the favorable environment and prices on energy resources, development of new deposits and intensifi cation of production at operating mines, it is possible that coal production output will grow by 1.6 times in FEFD by 2035 as against 2015. Otherwise, it is likely that coal production drops by 5% as compared with 2015. As per the balance sheets of coal for the period up to 2035, developed at the Institute for Energy Research of the RAS and making the basis of the new draft Energy strategy of Russia, it is expected that coal production in FEFD grows to 40 Mt by 2035 in accordance with the “conservative” scenario and to 70 Mt in accordance with the “target” scenario. The average price of the Far East power-generating coal reserves, calculated in USA dollars as of 2013 using the simulation models of the Institute for Energy Research of the RAS, can grow from US$ 34,1 to US$ 45,3–48,8 per ton of coal.
