In the very heart of Moscow, in Mokhovaya Street, opposite the Kremlin, the unique establishment for science, education and culture — Vernadsky State Geological Museum — is located. The Museum was founded in the period of initiation of the Moscow University in 1755 and now houses a collection that displays the history of geology and mineral mining in Russia. At present, the Museum follows four lines of development: museology, basic and applied research, enlightenment and education, culture and exhibition for the benefit of high visitorship. Every year the Museum welcomes over 50 thousand visitors. Personnel of the Museum include 2 Academicians, 25 Doctors and Candidates of Sciences. The scope of the research activity covers global metallogeny and geodynamics, ocean geology, geoinformation sciences and systems in geology based on GIS technologies, geothermy and industrial waste disposal. For the global metallogeny analyses, the Museum has created and has been continuously refilling the unparalleled database on mineral deposits in Russia and in the world. Using this database and ESRI software products, the interactive informational system (WEB-GIS) “World’s Largest Deposits” has been created and introduced into service. The core of the system is a web application available in Russian and in English. The WEB-GIS system is accessible via the Internet to users engaged in various geological research. The Museum’s experts have succeeded in analyzing distribution of large endogenous and exogenous deposits of hard minerals based on their location, time, reserves and geodynamic conditions of formation, with determination of cycles of generation of different minerals. Within the scope of this research area, the sequence of Cu–Ni–sulfide formation in the history of the Earth and in the evolution of mantle magmatism at different stages of development of geological structures has been studied, and specific ore-bearing bodies of intrusion have been related with the enclosing coeval extrusive rocks with the assistance of isotopic and geochemical characteristics, which are applicable as search criteria. The Museum and PLAZ LTD (in the capacity of an industrial partner) carry out team works on engineering a test model of an unmanned system for remote optical and magnitometric monitoring of natural and production-generated environment alongside with designing of sensors and procedures for magnitometric and multispectral surveying. Such a system will be of use to handle a wide range of tasks: prediction and prospecting of minerals with abnormal magnetic properties, verification of aeromagnetic survey data, analysis of mineral deposit structure, appraisal of technogenic deposits, geological mapping of hard-to-reach areas, investigation of aftereffect of geological and ecological disasters, etc. The Museum has developed and is implementing continuous education and enlightenment of youth in the field of geosciences, efficient nature management and ecological culture in accordance with the school–university–production flowchart. The work is organized for various ages, starting from a tender school age, through studentship, towards young experts to be production team leaders in the future. The Museum boosts the initiative advanced by the RF Ministry of Energy and the Academy of Mining Sciences on All-Russian Fuel and Energy Championships. This year the forum had gathered 45 student teams from 45 universities in Russia and Kazakhstan, the to-be power engineers, mining experts and geologists. The winners of the Championship are offered an opportunity of training in mining companies and under the Ministry of Energy of Russia.
