Deutsche Edelstahlwerke orders cooling bed

Deutsche Edelstahlwerke has ordered a new rake-type cooling bed from SMS Meer for its Siegen works in Germany as part of the modernization of its bar mill. The new cooling bed allows controlled cooling of the bars, surface-protecting transport and very straight finished products. Thus, all demands on quality steel are met.

In addition to round steel bars with dimensions from 21.5 to 90 millimeters, it will also be possible to cool hexagonal sections on the cooling bed in future.

“The aim of the modernization is to achieve a homogeneous temperature distribution in the bar layer,” says Jens Eisbach, Manager Bar Mill. “That will enable us to prevent inaccuracies when cutting the bars and to improve our productivity and quality in the finishing section.”

Deutsche Edelstahlwerke operates the world's first 3-roll PSM® (Precision Sizing Mill) with hydraulic roll adjustment under load from SMS Meer. It is additionally equipped with the MEERgauge® precision measurement system and a dynamic monitor control.

Commissioning of the new cooling bed is scheduled for the third quarter of 2015.
