Abstract

Cu—Fe—S system is the basis for mattes produced at sulphide copper ore feed processing. Over 80 compositions of Cu—Fe—S, system prepared in laboratory conditions have been investigated using methods of Differential Thermal Analysis, SEM, and EPMA. Liquidus surface fragment and Cu—Fe—S system’ splitting area have been plotted. Three paths of crystallysation of the said system’ compositions within the miscibility gap limits have been proposed, and mechanisms of high-melting phase formation resulting in metallised scaling build-up have been identified. The obtained data allowed defining areas of the matte’ compositions preventing from scaling on a hearth and walls of furnaces at melt’ temperature being 1100–1200 oС. The work’ results are based on the mattes produced in Vanyukov Furnace operating at the Copper Plant of MMC Norilsk Nickel’ Transpolar Division (Norilsk), but they could be applied for other units processing sulphide copper feed to matte.
