Abstract

Effect of calcium and several rare earth metals (Ce, Nd, Sm, Y, Gd, Dy) on oxidation resistance during heating of the aluminum alloys containing 5–6% of Mg was researched. The method where oxidation value was determined by the weight increase after melting was chosen for estimation of the oxidation rate. Investigation indicated that all oxidation to consist on the oxide film formation. At significant oxidation the oxide film thickness on the alloy surfaces equaled 130–170 μm. On the other hand, in samples subjected to weak oxidation the oxide film thickness equaled 20–80 μm. It was shown, that all metals used as additional alloying elements decreased oxidation of the Al–Mg-alloys in molten state. The most oxidation resistance among them was observed in the Al–Mg-alloys containing calcium.
