Mining operations in the Extreme North and on the Arctic Shelf condition the demand for plastic lubricants with the improved low-temperature characteristics. In Russia imported plastic lubricants boast wide application, and an efficient domestic analog would a timely decision. The tests of the plastic lubricant Arctol have proved that the lubricant is a full-fledged efficient substitution for imported greases. It is a burning issue of the day to develop plastic lubricants with the improved low-temperature characteristics, the other performance being the same. The analysis of composition and properties of low-temperature lubricants reveal that the best antiwelding properties and low-temperature characteristic are intrinsic to lubricants made of frost-resistant synthetic and petroleum oils thickened by lithium soaps of fatty acids and containing antifriction additives. As a result of the fractional analysis and generalization of the modern domestic and foreign frostresistant plastic lubricants, after the joint research undertaken by the 25th State Research Institute of Chemmotology of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation Engineering Lubricants Company MISCOM, the all-purpose all-season multi-function frost-resistant lubricant Arctol with the improved service properties has been developed and is now manufactured. The test results show that the pilot batch lubricant Arctol complies with the standards and norms imposed in general-purpose modern low-temperature greases, considerably surmounts lubricants Litol-24, TsIATIM-21 and basic foreign analogs in terms of low-temperature (startability at –60 °Сm efficient viscosity at –50 °С) and lubricating properties while the other performance indexes are at the same level.
