Abstract

Higher education reform in Russia involves institutional transformation of universities. Competitive promotion of universities that are at the top position in the field of high quality education and advanced academic research improves competitive advantage of national higher education. The article informs on implementation of national projects–contests aimed at formation of network of national research universities (national and federal level). The authors analyze quantitative and qualitative characteristics of training of mining engineers at research universities in Russia. The described lines of development of higher education in mining include: elaboration of university standards; evolvement of the concept of level-wise education in university training of mining engineers; interaction between level-wise and additional education—actualization of the concept of continuous education.
