Abstract

History of a transport department of Polar Division of MMC «Norilsk Nickel» is indissolubly related to sophisticated and glorious history of Norilsk Mining & Metallurgical Works. In 1930ies mostly carts were used. By 1940ies the use of cartage for metallurgical facility construction was minimized. Therefore the department turned into a motor transport unit. Railway communication played a significant role in metallurgical plants erection as well. Presently transport and railway departments are an integral part of Polar Division of Norilsk Nickel. Transport services are also rendered by one of subsidiaries of the Company. The main objective of transport system is to completely and timely satisfy Polar Division needs in transportation and services along with higher efficiency and quality of transport services. This problem is being solved by improvement of transportation arrangement, better coordination between the operation of all types of transport, further development of planning and infrastructure, complex mechanization of loading/unloading as well as introduction of new equipment. Nowadays the development and improvement of Polar Division transport system tends to unify the involved transport, to implement the means and systems monitoring the operation of all types of vehicles. In the terms of further development of transport and logistic infrastructure the Company is planning to introduce the most advanced technologies to rail transportation. Thus there are plans to solve numerous issues of information support for the railway personnel, departments and facilities under service. Reasonable planning, introduction of up-to-date equipment and automated systems are the keystone to the successful solution of the challenges set by the Norilsk Nickel management before the transport department.
