The main purpose of this research was development of approach to determination of optimal conditions for obtaining of ultra- and nano-dispersed titanium carbide powders by calcium hydride method. Obtaining of titanium carbide powder by investigated method is concluded in reduction of titanium dioxide powder by calcium hydride to titanium and simultaneous titanium carbidization by carbon, which is placed in the starting mix material as calcium carbide. There was considered the mechanism and kinetics of synthesis of titanium carbide powders during hydride-calcium process. Influence of temperature on basic characteristics of titanium carbide powder was investigated. Research of phase and chemical composition of powders, obtained at the temperatures of 1100, 1150 and 1200 oC, showed that only one phase (TiC) and minor amount of all impurities (except oxygen) are contained in these powders. Presence of oxygen is explained by formation of thin oxide films on the surface of titanium carbide particles in the processes of hydrometallurgical treatment of synthesis product, washing and drying of powder. There was experimentally shown that the synthesis temperature decreasing leads to decreasing of average powder particle size and more uniform distribution of powder particles' sizes. Titanium carbide powder batch with average particle size of 300 nm and oxygen content of 0.76% (wt.) was obtained by calcium-hydride method. Increasing of process temperature from 1100 oC to 1200 oC leads to decreasing of oxygen content in titanium carbide. According to this, oxygen content is 0.19% (wt.) at the temperature of 1200 oC. Increasing of temperature allows to reach the required purity of final product in terms of oxygen content, which significantly increases the size of powder particles.
