Abstract

This paper gives a brief description of the history of development of Russian enrichment industry and creation of gas centrifuge method of uranium 235 enrichment both in Russia and USA. There is introduced the information about the research work in the field of chemical composition development, semi-finished products manufacturing technology and commissioning of Russian 1960 high-strength aluminium alloy (Al – Zn – Mg – Cu system) into the gas centrifuge construction. This article describes the role of outstanding Russian scientist — academician I. N. Fridlyander — in this study. The problems, arising during the exploitation of metallic parts of gas centrifuges, are described in this article along with the ways of their solving. This paper also covers a subject of current status of investigation of 1960 alloy for special constructions. There are described the reasons of fracture and decreased workability of the first generation of 1960 alloy die forgings, made of extruded rod. Nowadays, gas centrifuges are unique energetics units, constructed for a twenty five — thirty year service life. Their performance is extended by 8 times because of construction improvement and development of technology of 1960 alloy tubes and die forgings production. Accident-free service life of gas centrifuges is provided by the following factors:
— maintenance of regulated investigations procedure and control during installation of new generation of centrifuges;
— improvement of chemical composition of 1960 alloy and semifinished products manufacturing process at “Kamensk Uralsky Metallurgical Works” JSC (“KUMZ” JSC);
— high class production standards.
