  History

“Gorny zhurnal” is the oldest mining periodic edition worldwide: it has been established in 1825 by the special decree of the emperor Alexander I. The first issue has been published in July 1825. From its beginning, “Gorny zhurnal” was a comprehensive edition and reflected all 3 areas of the mining activities: geology, mining matter itself and metallurgy. The journal has quickly become respectable among national and international specialists.

Until 1918, “Gorny zhurnal” has been published in St. Petersburg on the base of the Mining military school (later transformed in St. Petersburg mining institute) and had state support. October revolution in 1917 has interrupted established process of edition, and the editorial board has been evacuated in Moscow. In 1918-1920 there was the pause in the edition caused by the Civil war in Russia

In the Soviet times “Gorny zhurnal” has played the important role in the development of Russian mining industry. Since 1939 it was the official edition of the Commissariats of iron and steel industry and non-ferrous metallurgy. Based on “Gorny zhurnal”, several specialized editions have been established: “Ugol’” (“Coal”) in 1925, “Tsvetnye metally” (Non-ferrous metals”) in 1926, “Stal’” (“Steel”) in 1931 and “Neftyanoe khozyaistvo” (“Oil industry”) in 1920.

The second interruption in the edition of this journal has been occurred during the WWII, but already in 1944 this edition has been regained. In 1940-ies and 1050-ies publications in “Gorny zhurnal” have mainly mobilized the miners to increase mining volumes, to restore the destructed works and to achieve stable operation of the mining industry. Since the beginning of 1960-ies, “Gorny zhurnal” has paid more attention to the problems of scientific and technical progress in the mining industry. The practice of thematic publications devoted to the actual mining problems has been realized.

In 1975, “Gorny zhurnal” has been awarded with the Order of the Labour Red Banner. In the 1990-ies, during Perestroyka, the journal has overlived very difficult period of cutting the state support and several structural reorganizations, until in 1996 it has been incorporated in “Ore and Metals” publishing house. After this event the financial state of the journal has strengthened, its polygraphic level has increased substabtially and international relations has expanded.

Now “Gorny zhurnal” is the basic edition of the Intergovernmental council of CIS countries for exploring, usage and protection of the earth bowels. In this connection, since 2001 the journal has published many thematical issues devoted to the mining industry of CIS countries. Such states as Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhsatn, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tadxhikistan have been presented in such way.

Since 2003 “Gorny zhurnal” has got its English supplement entitled “Eurasian mining”. Another supplement, “Gorny mir” is devoted to collecting and analyzing of foreign mining information.

“Obogashchenie rud” has been established by “Mekhanobr” institute in 1956 as a scientific and technical bulletin. “Mekhanobr” is the leading Russian (formerly Soviet) institute on ore concentration and mineral processing and it needed in the special edition for publishing its new developments in the field of equipment and technology for mineral processing and designing of mineral processing enterprises. The first edition of such kind has been established still in 1931 but this journal entitled “Gorno-obogatitelnoe delo” (“Mining and concentrating matter”) has existed only two years.

“Obogashchenie rud” was rather more successful edition. Being at first the narrow specialized journal of “Mekhanobr” institute and Scientific-research institute of economics and information in non-ferrous metals industry, it become step-by-step the common magazine on very wide range of mineral processing problems of different raw materials, iron ore and non-ferrous ores, non-metallic minerals and later man-caused materials.

The journal has described the most prospective directions of mineral processing science, such as investigation of ore substantial composition; progressive technologies of collective flotation; development of cyanide-free methods of concentrate separation; development of combined technologies; search of efficient reactants; development of ecologically free methods of radiometric, magnetic and electric separation. Also many theoretical articles have been published on the problems of ore preparation, concentration and pelletizing.

In 1992 the bulletin “Obogashchenie rud” has been transformed into journal, and since 1997 it began to be published by “Ore and Metals” publishing house, At the same time the number of founders increased. During last decade the new topics have started to be reflected in the journal: raw material base, economics, marketing, environment protection, processing of secondary raw materials etc.

Every national and international event in the world of mineral processing is described at the pages of “Obogashchenie rud”. We can mention here e.g. Plaksin’s readings, congresses of CIS mineral processors, International mineral processing conferences (Rome 2000, Cape Town 2003, Istanbul 2006).

“Tsvetnye metally” is the leading scientific, technical and technological journal in non-ferrous metallurgy, it elucidates the main problems of theory and practice of mineral processing, complex usage of nonferrous raw materials, production and processing of non-ferrous metals, automation of metallurgical processes, as well as economical, marketing and ecological problems.

The journal has been published since 1926 when it was entitled as “Mineral’noe syryo I ego pererabotka” (“Mineral raw material and its processing”), since 1929 – “Mineral’noe syryo I tsvetnye metally” (“Mineral raw material and non-ferrous metals”). The journal “Tsvetnye metally” itself has been started in 1930. In 1940, after reforming publishing activities in the USSR, this journal has started to publish actual surveys and articles about the state of foreign non-ferrous metallurgy, as well as a lot of publications about mineral processing, metallurgy and metal machining.

In 1950-ies, the number of articles about mining problem has decreased essentially, and the section “Geology and mining matter” has disappeared completely in 1954. More attention has been paid then to automation and mechanization problems and equipment modernization. In 1960-ies a lot of materials about foreign conferences and exhibitions has been published in the section “Foreign equipment”.

In 1970-80-ies there was large increase of number of publications devoted to the works, institutes, universities. The journal regularily published the papers about innovations and their putting into practice.

During quick changes in the national economics in 1990-ies, “Tsvetnye metally” has reflected current situation in non-ferrous metallurgy. Serious attention has been paid to the problems of waste-free and ecologically safe technological routes and production facilities.

At present time separate sections of the journal are devoted to processing of heavy, rare, rare earth, light, radioactive non-ferrous metals, carbon and composite materials, X ray elements as well as metal forming processes (extrusion, rolling, drawing etc.).The journal also publish materials about economical problems, management, marketing and monitoring of the markets.

Since 2001 the most interesting articles are translated into English and published in the quarterly supplement “Nonferrous Metals”.

”Chernye metally” is the Russian-German metallurgical journal, the only Russian monthly edition (published since 1961) describing up-to-date state and development prospects of both global and national iron and steel industry in details. Thematically “Chernye metally” covers all technological chain of iron and steel production, starting from preparation of raw materials and up to finishing processes for ready products; blast furnace practice, steelmaking, casting rolling and tube production are the main themes of our publications.

Edition of this journal has been started by “Metallurgiya” publishing house in collaboration with Verlag “Stahleisen” (Germany) at first as Russian edition of “Stahl und Eisen” journal. In 1960-70-ies it has been published 24 times a year and the issues were thematical, devoted to the separate metallurgical processes.

In 1972, the USSR has signed the Internationa convention of copyrights, and juridical base has been established for edition of “Chernye metally” journal. The license agreement with Verlag “Stahleisen” has been concluded and it is prolonged permanently.

In the end of 1980-ies “Chernye metally” journal became the monthly edition. It allowed to make it more volumetric and thematically complete. The new rubrics have been organized: automation and simulation of technological processes, organization and management of production, economics and financies, power engineering and ecology, metallurgical history.

The new stage of the journal’s development has come in the mid-1990-ies, when “Ore and Metals” publishing house has started to publish “Chernye metally” instead of bancrupted “Metallurgiya” publishing house. It helped to improve essentially polygraphic quality of this edition. Verlag “Stahleisen” has agreed to allow publishing advertising materials and editorials by Russian authors (for this purpose the special section “News of the Russian and CIS metallurgy” has been created). Additionally other rubrics have been started: “Metallurgical news of the countries and regions”. “Scientific and technical news abroad” etc that have got interest of the readership. These reforms have rised the level of the journal and made it more interesting and really international edition.

During recent years “Chernye metally” regularly publishes not only articles and editorials, but also advertising materials about national and foreign companies as well as presentations of scientific and education centers. Especial attention is paid to combined publications “editorial + advertisement”. Joint editions with other journals of “Ore and Metals” publishing house.

“Chernye metally” has two free Russian supplements: “MPT. Metallurgical plant and technology international” (2 times a year) and “CP+T. Casting plant and technology international” (once a year). Since 2006 “Chernye metally” started to publish also the English supplement “CIS Iron & Steel Review” for subscription and distribution at the international fairs and conferences. It includes English versions of the most interesting publications in “Chernye metally”.

Development prospects of “Chernye metally” journal are connected first of all with its universal features, as soon as it reflects both innovations of national and international metallurgy.
