Gornyi Zhurnal

The March 2021 issue of Gornyi Zhurnal is devoted to the 70th anniversary of the VNIPIpromtekhnologii Institute, one of the leading design, survey, research and development institutions in the mining and metallurgy sector of Russia. The Institute is an affiliate of Atomredmetzoloto Uranium Holding Co, which is Rosatom’s Mining Division.

The articles collected in this issue describe the milestones and the long-term R&D activities of the Institute in the area of advancing the in-situ uranium leaching technology in Russia and in the CIS countries, as well as in the field of enhancing efficiency of uranium heap leaching. The benefits obtained in the peaceful uses of nuclear explosives are illustrated. The practices that ensure radiation safety in the sites of peaceful nuclear explosions are described, and the safe use of hydrocarbon gas recovered from oil reservoirs as a fuel for residential boilers is discussed.

The team of Gornyi Zhurnal expresses deep grief and sorrow over the untimely deaths of DrEng and Professor S. A. Ilin, Chief Mining Consultant and the former Associate Editor in Chief of the Journal, and DrEng and Professor Vitaly I. Borshch-Komponiets, a prominent figure in geomechanics and surveying, and the former member of the Editorial Board of Gornyi Zhurnal, who have died this year. This issue pays tribute to the memory of these extraordinary men in the world of science and technology.
