Thorium in the nuclear cycle

V. I. Boyko, V. A. Vlasov, I. I. Zherin, A. A. Maslov, I. V. Shamanin

The book generalizes and systematizes the results of investigations undertaken in the leading Russian and foreign scientific centers with thorium place in the nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) as a subject of these investigations.

Key moments determined by positive and negative thorium features relating to other materials are considered; they allow to formulate well-thought estimations of efficiency of the thorium-based nuclear power technology. Chemical properties of thorium and its main compounds, main possible technologies for production of thorium and metallic thorium compounds for usage in the nuclear power industry are examined. Physical properties of thorium and its compounds are also observed from the point of view of their meeting with requirements of reactor technologies and non-proliferation of nuclear materials. basic grounds of physics of reactor and main components of its calculated schemes are considered. The results of comparative analysis of thorium and uranium properties are presented, advantages and disadvantages of uranium-plutonium and thorium-uranium NFC are determined as well as information allowing to compare NFC parameters in varying the main dividing and raw nuclides. basic technologies of processing of radiated nuclear fuel are shown.
